An Irrawaddy dolphin calf has died in Boeng Treng village, Sop commune of Prek Prasop district in Kratie province.

The body of the dolphin, which was male, measured 1.04 metres long and weighed 14 kilogrammes. It was discovered about 16 kilometres from the Kampi pool dolphin habitat.

The Fisheries Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture made the announcement on Monday.

Following an autopsy the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and an expert from the Fisheries Administration determined that the cause of the dolphin calf’s death was due to drowning after being caught in fishing gear, evidenced by scarring caused by fishing nets.
