The Chinook and Steelhead fish trap at the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake Rivers is in action as a part of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game’s Comparative Survival Study.

“Comparing the kind of, the travel times and then survival in between barging fish and then also passively letting them through the damn,” Dave O’Very, Fish and Game’s fish trap repair mechanic, said.

After a fish is in the trap, step one is a scan.

“We’ll scan it with this HPR, which is pretty much just picking up if it has a tag already inside of it,” O’Very said.

Now if it didn’t already have a tag, Fish and Game will insert their own, and then it’s about data collection.
