Crayfish, or crawdads, are freshwater crustaceans commonly encountered while conducting fisheries research. They are effective scavengers that feed on a variety of animals and dead organic debris. They are most active at night and generally remain hidden during the day under stones or in burrows. There are nine different crayfish species in California and identification requires close examination of their ventral side.
