Correctly identifying fish is the foundation for nearly everything we do. To bring new staff up to speed and hone the skills of our seasoned employees, we regularly conduct training workshops on topics like fish ID. Last week, we covered the 65 freshwater fish species we’re most likely to cross paths with in California. Although we focused on identifying characteristics of the different fishes, we also included aspects such as their native range, environmental tolerances, and sometimes unusual stories of introduction to California’s waterways. As our recent oddball fish visitors to the Central Valley have shown, it’s always good to expect the unexpected!
